What the numbers mean
An N-bit converter divides the reference span into steps, so one LSB equals
The ideal signal-to-noise ratio of a perfect N-bit ADC with a full-scale sine input is
— quantization noise alone. Real converters specify an effective number of bits (ENOB) below N; check the datasheet's SINAD figure. For high-resolution measurements remember that one LSB of a 24-bit ADC at 2.5 V is ~150 nV — your layout and reference noise matter more than the bit count.
